How to Use Stencils in Mixed Media Art

my art supply stash with stencils, stamps and ink from scrapbook.com

Stencils have always intimidated me, probably because the decor fad of the 80’s when I bought my first home was to stencil things on your walls, and they had to look perfect! I tried them a few times and they were always crooked or not filled in all the way, or the edges looked too smudgy, just not the look but in mixed media, smudgy, crooked, imperfect perfection is the goal.

I think I belong to a large club of art supply collectors who don’t necessarily USE all the lovely things we buy. I wanted to start using some of my pretties so have been watching the masters use their stencils in unique ways in art projects and journals.

Well, I have used a few of these at least! Good to look back at pictures of my pretties from Scrapbook.com.

Stenciling Techniques for Mixed Media Art

Tamara Laport goes through several different ways to use her whimsical stencil pack including spray inks, heavy body acrylics, liquid acrylics, modeling paste and more.

Tamara Laport Stencil Ideas Tips & Tricks

Another of my art journaling heroes is Dina Wakley. She taught me in her art journaling books that it’s OK to copy, it’s OK to trace, it’s OK to learn from your teachers. Yes, you should credit them with being your inspiration of course but if you’ve ever tried to copy what an art teacher does exactly I’m sure you’ve learned that yours looks like a sister or a cousin to the original example but it really never looks EXACTLY like the originals piece of art.

Dina is using a few of her stencils as well as heavy body paint in her demonstration.

Tim Holtz Stencil Layering Ideas at CHA

Tim demonstrates how to layer random stencils and stamps with inks to get lots of different effects The goal is always perfectly imperfect. Love that quote from Tim. Stenciling first with acrylic paint and then adding ink on top creates a resist of the original layer.

Dry Stencil Techniques from Stencil Girl

She uses pan pastels and sand paper in ways I’ve never seen before in this video tutorial.

I hope these tutorials from some mixed media artists will help you get some of your lovely art supply collection a little dirty instead of staying in their pristine condition in the box. As Dina says. Done is better than perfect!

tamara laporte willowing lifebook

I found Tamara Laporte through a couple artist friends when I was asking for a recommendation for a multi-teacher class, she and Lifebook came highly recommended. I am not exaggerating when I say that following along with Tam as she teaches you to draw and paint adorable whimsical girls has so changed my life in magical ways.

Life Book – The Book by Tamara Laporte

Tamara Laporte Online Mixed Media Art Classes

The most famous of Tam’s classes and now the subject of her first-ever book, “Lifebook” runs annually with an early bird pricing showing up in December through January and then for full price the remainder of the year. You really could join in at any time because for your art class purchase you are allowed do download ALL of the hundreds of video’s so you could go back at any time. The thing you would miss however is the amazingly supportive community that Tamara and her teamwork to create in the Facebook and Ning groups that comprise all the other artists and artists in training. You’ll find brand new mixed-media people like me, to professional artists, side by side going through the weekly lessons together. At first, it IS a bit intimidating, I won’t lie, but the support you are given when you share just a bit is a bit humbling and has brought me to tears a few times, not only for the support and help that I have received but when I’ve seen it with other’s in the class.

You can still sign up for Lifebook 2018 and don’t worry about catching up, I’d probably do the first two lessons that Tam runs to get the idea of how Lifebook works and then join in with where the rest of the folks are and look through the previous lessons to see which ones appeal to you. But that’s the whole Hippie Artist part of me, you don’t have to go in a straight line or follow any rules to achieve a great result in art or in life.

You can also go back and do just Tam’s lessons from past years of Life Book. I think I’ve bought almost all of these when she’s had them on sale. You won’t be working along with the class with these but you can always post on the Willowing and Friends Facebook page.

lifebook online art class for 2021 by tamara laporte

Getting back into art as an adult is all due to the adult coloring book trend for me. I had given it all up and had been concentrating on the serious things in life. Getting back to my creative side has, however, made all the parts of my life better. The more art supplies I bought to color with, the more I wanted to play with my other art supplies that I’d tucked away. The more I played with color, the more I wanted to create and grow and learn and be able to call myself an artist too. Enter Life Book!

Join Life Book 2021 now to take advantage of Tam’s early bird 20% off code!

Tam is joined by 30 incredible artists, crafters and healers who are all gearing up to share their art, crafting and personal growth techniques with YOU! With a holistic approach to creativity, self-development, and healing, you’ll be creating several loose mixed media art journal pages per month which by the end of the year you will bind into a glorious journal (a Life Book)! This year you will also be able to try out other art crafts like art doll making & basket weaving and we will also provide you with nurturing and nourishing personal development activities (like yoga and NVC) to support any personal development you’re undertaking. I looked for art classes in my area in watercolor and painting and drawing and couldn’t really find much but to improve the look of my Facebook newsfeed I’d started following artists in all areas that appealed to me. I tend to love looking at bright happy colors and beautiful whimsical characters, mermaids, and fairies, hand-lettered pages, and bits of ephemera adding to the artisticness of the piece. That opened me up to all of the artists across the world that give art classes online. What’s cool is that these classes in many ways are even better than going to a class locally because I don’t have to pack up all my supplies and I can stop the teacher and rewind everything they say whenever I need to. Many of the classes are lifetime access and some even allow you to download the videos of the classes for your own use.

Since 2018 Life Book has become more inclusive and holistic by opening the course up to other art forms (like clay work, photography, and writing) + Tamara is also bringing in some more wellness experts that will support people on their wellness/ personal development journey!!

I really can’t explain how much I am enjoying this art journaling -art therapy – get messy and happy experience led by Tamara Laporte from Willowing Arts. She heads up a team of a whole bunch of wonderful artists who share new lessons with our big group of loving and lovable beginning to expert artists to learn and enjoy.

Life Book 2016

Life Book 2016 Tamara Laporte Edition
Life Book 2016 Tamara Laporte Edition

Tam’s lessons included with Lifebook 2016

  • The Happy Traveller – Create a front-facing girl (your ‘Happy Traveller’) with 1 or more ‘sacred soul animals’ surrounding her. These ‘sacred soul animals’ will be with you on your journey. The idea is that you can invoke or refer to these animals as ‘animal medicine’, they are creatures that can guide you/ help you on your way.
  • Creativity Takes Courage – A great warm-up session to get your creative mojo started by going over some warm-up mixed media steps, both for the mind and for the hand.
  • Your Quirky Amazing Life – I love making Quirky Birds, they are super fun, relatively easy, get you in touch with your inner child and they bring smiles where ever they go! 😉 For this lesson, we use characteristics of people/ things we are grateful for and assign them to the quirky bird as a way to celebrate and honour them. Technique-wise we work with a very basic wet-in-wet technique and I also include a PDF on ‘cultivating gratitude’.
  • Roots & Ground, Wings & Light – Create a mixed media front-facing portrait. We also reflect on the theme ‘honouring and grounding’, includes an optional meditation.
  • Your Story Matters, The Ripple Effect – Using the fun technique of foam marbling and reflecting on getting in touch with the interconnectedness of us all and how each and every one of us matters in this world. We symbolically represent this theme in the form of a drop of water falling into a larger body of water, making ripples.
  • Dancing With Shadow – Focusing on working with our inner critic and our creative blocks and using Tam’s favourite ‘paint over collage’ art technique. Work with symbolism and transformation. ‘Paint over collage’ is a really interesting and different way to start a painting. It can really expand your understanding of shape & colour and lends itself well to go deeper. Includes optional meditation.
  • Embracing All of You – Working with the concept of ’embracing all of ourselves’, including the sadder/ darker parts of ourselves. Includes a video and PDF on ‘self – forgiveness’. Create a ‘sitting’ girl using a ‘silhouetting’ technique, gelli-plating and ‘masking’.
  • Grow Free – Letting loose and become free-er by creating creative abstract flowers! It’s so fun and liberating creating in this way. Includes an optional personal development exercise which works on transforming limiting beliefs into liberating beliefs.
  • Expressive Florals – smaller bonus lesson from Life Book 2014 (a fun bonus lesson using paint to create big colourful messy expressionist flowers).
  • Build Your Dream & Affirmation Board – Smaller ‘bonus lesson’ where we reflect on the connectedness of us all and celebrate our vulnerability and authenticity as a way into deeper connection with our fellow humans. I show you how I like creating a dream/ affirmation board in the non-traditional (just-Tam) way.
  • Zentangle Butterfly – smaller ‘bonus lesson’ where we create a zentangle butterfly on an inky background that flies towards everything you’re wanting to call in more and leaves behind it a ‘trail of what you want to let go of’.
  • Other bonus lessons include: ‘art bites for beginners’ which explains basic supplies and how they are used and Basic colour theory.
  • Pumpkin and Spice – working with the theme of Celebration & Play we experiment, explore, invent, thinking outside of the box, doing something different to what you usually do. Create a beautiful Autumn wreath and make some super cute quirky pumpkins!

Life Book Art Supply List

October 5, 2020 By Mixed Media Art Newbie 2 Comments

coloring book affiliate disclosure
tamara laporte lifebook the book

I’ve noticed that the supply list for Ever After is quite similar to Lifebook so If you have bought art supplies for either of these courses, you are probably good to go. Some of the art supplies listed are easier to find in the UK than they are in the US so I’ve gone through and found alternatives you can find on Amazon or in retail art stores in the U.S.

Watercolor Paper for Life Book

Tamara recommends watercolor paper over mixed media paper because lots of the art lessons are pretty “wet” She uses hot-pressed paper sometimes in a block. For the US market, hotpress paper is harder to find and quite a bit more expensive so you can experiment with what you can find. I have found that Strathmore WC Paper works well for me but I’m going to try some hotpress I found at Hobby Lobby in Life Book 2020.

Several people in the class are using art journals this year and I’m attempting that as well with this beauty that my husband gifted me with for Christmas. It’s SO LARGE for me but I’m determined to give it a go.

Strathmore 32 page 11×14 watercolor journal

watercolor journals

It comes in several sizes and I’m excited to try it out.

Strathmore 11 x 14 US UK or Canada
Strathmore 8 1/2 x 11 US UK or Canada

Watercolor Paper

I’ve ruined a few of my projects because I tried to use mixed media paper instead of Watercolor Paper for some of the projects in the Lifebook course, I recommend some of each. Some projects that you are cutting up as mini art or bookmarks etc will be fine with the mixed media paper, but many of the lessons really need that watercolor flow.

In the US, we have a bit of a harder time finding Hot Pressed WC paper but it can be done.

Arches Hot Press Watercolor Paper

This one seems to be a favorite for the pro’s, it’s pricey for sure and I personally haven’t invested in it yet but if you are at a level where you want the best, this seems to be the recommended stuff. This is the large 10 x 14.

Click to Order Amazon US, UK or Canada – At Michaels
If you live in the US you can order from Michaels and have it delivered to you or the store nearest you. There are several sizes and options including the Arches Block. Click here to see the online only options at Michaels.

Paints for Life Book and any of Tamara Laporte’s classes

Tam’s favorite mixed media supply seems to be Caran D’Ache Neocolor II crayons, she also uses artist watercolor crayons that are no longer being made but you can find them on occasion in art supply stores, they are called Neoart. In the UK and Canada these are called Watercolor Pastels. It is the same product. I am able to get them at my fancy art store in open stock so if there is a color you love, I’d suggest getting the biggest box you can afford and then filling in. Tam uses these on every one of her projects I think.

Flesh Tone Acrylics

Flesh tone acrylics are of course quite important to create Tam’s iconic whimsical ladies. It doesn’t have to be expensive.

Ceramcoat Santa’s Flesh is a favorite.

Posca Paint Pens are perfect for fine details and work over every type of art medium and then dry permanently.

Tam recommends 1 white & 1 black posca pen with a fine nib

Gesso – Once again either Liquitex or Golden works perfectly. Make sure you get Matte. Gesso’s regular state is white but it also comes in clear and black. You can also tint Gesso. You’ll learn all about this magical substance in the Lifebook art lessons

Art Supply Shopping

Sometimes I think searching for and collecting art supplies is my favorite part of the process. Collage Papers can really be things you already have, sheet music, book pages, movie tickets, scrapbooks or cardmaking paper you already have in your collection. Pick things that have colors that make you happy! Places to look for old books & sheet music are the library used book stores or thrift shops. You can also print interesting papers off of the internet. The New York Library free to use image collection is amazing to find unique ideas. Sometimes art supplies are found in the strangest places. Did you know that pretty printed napkins make amazing backgrounds in your art journal or mixed media projects? I didn’t either until taking this course. The best variety and prices I’ve found in the US is at Tuesday Morning.

Washi Tape

Washi Tape is meant to be a semi-permanent tape so you can reposition it or use it to hold things down while the mat gel gesso dry. There are so many colors and designs, I, of course, adore all the Jane Davenport designs because she uses lots of aqua and pink and mermaid ocean themes. Michaels carries a ton of Washi Tape too.

Don’t forget to use your coupons online at Michaels and then decide to use the free shipping or to have it delivered to the store for you to pick up.

Collage Paper

This really can be free or very cheap! You can use non-glossy magazine pages, old books, old music sheets, letters, envelopes, if you belong to a Buy Nothing Group ask for some there, people are always trying to get rid of their accumulated stuff.

Scrapbook Paper

If you were or still are a scrapbooker, raid those supplies! The non-cardstock versions work perfectly for collage.

This is a fabulous printed tissue paper assortment.

Serviettes – Paper Napkins

My favorites spot to buy these in the US is Tuesday Morning! Michaels has some bright colored basics with holiday ones emerging of course. Watch for those sales on those!

Amazon has a decent selection as well. I love using napkins in my collages.

I have these pretty birds and use them all the time.

Tim Holtz has an entire collection of

Rubber Brayer

This essential little tool really comes in handy for making sure your layers of collage stay tidy and don’t crumple but you’ll need to to spread gesso too.

This speedball one at Michaels is perfect, remember to use your 40% off coupon, that’s how I built up my art supply stash for sure.

Lots of Speedball Brayer options on Amazon too

beauty and the beast ever after fairy tale art classes

Fairy Tale Art… what could be better?

Tamara has pulled together a collection of 15 mixed media artists, each one teaching a lesson using their favorite fairy tale characters and their own favorite techniques. Meet the 2018 Artists!

Ever After includes a Fairy Tale Art Lesson from each of these Amazing Mixed Media Artists.
Ever After includes a Fairy Tale Art Lesson from each of these Amazing Mixed Media Artists.

  • Lord of the Rings – Katrina Koltes
  • Sleeping Cutie – Tiare Smith
  • Raggedy Ann – Danielle Donaldson

It will run over a period of 4 months and you can join either ‘Fairy Tales‘ or ‘Fairy Tales with Style Development‘. The first (fairy tale lessons only) can be taken by anyone; budding beginner artists, intermediates and the more experienced. It is for those who are interested in learning how to create beautiful fairy tale inspired paintings in a variety of mixed media art techniques. Each teacher on Ever After has chosen one fairytale, myth or magical story to work with and will use the beauty, storytelling, deeper meaning and symbolism of the fairy tale to inspire their lesson. The fairy tale only package on its own does not cover style development.

The second (‘Fairy Tales with Style Development‘)  contains all fairy tale lessons and all style development content. The fairy tale lessons will be used to explore and develop our styles as well as learning new techniques from the teachers. Many artists and students who’ve been on my courses over the years have struggled with developing their own style. There aren’t really any courses out there that dedicate themselves to this element of what it means to be an artist, yet, it’s one of the most frequently asked questions I get! So I felt called to finally create something! Yay! The style development content is very rich and in depth. We look at concepts such as: “the story of you”, “inspiration, how to find it, how to use it”, “stepping outside of comfort zones/ changing things up” and “creative blocks, like the inner critic, fears, comparison etc”.

From NOW through July 5, 2018, you can get 20% off by using this code MAGIC2018 when you order!

Another BIG change is that you now have lifetime access to all the lessons! No more scrambling at the end to download the ones you haven’t gotten to yet because the sunshine was calling your name.

For extra magic in your life! 😀 There is also an option to ‘add on’ the fairy tale lessons from previous Ever After courses. These ‘Ever After Fairytale Bundles‘  (EA2016 Fairytale bundle and EA2017 Fairytale bundle) include all the fairy tale lessons from previous Ever After teachers).

Art Supplies Needed For Ever After Fairy Tale Art Classes

Paper:
Tamara works on 140lbs hotpressed watercolor paper.
Brand-wise Tam usually use: Daler-Rowney or Saunders & Waterford – She works either on 9 x 12” or 12 x 16”. Cold pressed is fine too, but don’t go for less than 140lbs in weight. Other brands that will also be fine: Fabriano/ Strathmore/ Canson. I recommend Strathmore or Fabriano, the Canson brand says it’s 140lbs but if you compare it to the Strathmore it’s much lighter and doesn’t stand up to the “Tam Method” of scrubbing/blending on your faces.

Paints:
Water-soluble crayons – Caran D’ache Neocolor II
Tam has lots of high priced brands mentioned but unless you are going to be selling this art, or if it’s going into your art journal, I use cheaper craft paints and am happy with my results. I have a few of these pricey options I use on occasion but they are NOT necessary for most of the projects. I love Ceramcoat, Americana etc available at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Walmart etc.
Some Heavy-bodied Acrylic Paints – Daler Rowney/ Golden or Winsor Newton
Golden Fluid Acrylics (they are very expensive if you want to try these out, buy 2 or 3 of your favorite colors to start with)
Fun but expensive and optional: Golden High Flows (get only a few if you want them)

Pencils:
Watercolor pencils: Derwent Inktense/ Caran D’ache Supracolor (Optional)
Graphite pencils: 2b & heavier – I like the graphgear 1000 by pentel but any pencil will do – mechanical ones are better for finer detail.
Graphite crayons are fun but optional
Color pencils by Prismacolor or Caran D’ache. Prismacolor has some new erasable pencils that I am loving for sketching too.

Mediums:

  • Gel Medium: Golden or Liquitex I have both heavy and soft. If you just want to buy 1 go for soft matte. (Here again, I prefer Liquitex, both price point and that it’s non-toxic with no smell.
  • Cheaper gel medium to use as an adhesive:
    • Daler- Rowney Impasto Gel Matt
    • Golden Matte Medium
    • Liquitex Matte Medium (There is a Liquitex Gel Medium too, it is stickier)

Collage Materials:
Variety of patterned scrapbooking papers, patterned napkins, magazine pages, book pages, music scores and photos – some washi tapes are fun too.

Tools:

  • Brayer
  • Palette Knives
  • Scissors
  • Rulers
  • Erasers/
  • Heat gun or Hair Dryer
  • Foam Brushes
  • Brushes (Tamara uses Pro Arte Acrylix brushes for her method with faces. In the US I could only find them from this UK seller on Ebay but there is no shipping.  For her work any soft haired brushes will do)

Markers:
Posca pens (black/ white – fine-nibbed and thicker
nibbed) OR
Poster paint sharpies aka water based NOT oil based (black/ white – fine-nibbed and thicker nibbed)
Tombow Markers in your favorite colors
Mermaid Markers from Jane Davenport
Paint Over Pens from Jane Davenport

Inks/ Sprays:
Dylusions Ink Sprays (start with a few)
Daler Rowney Acrylic Artists Ink
Jane Davenport Inks (Available at Michaels)
India Ink (Small bottle)

Gesso:
White Gesso (Tamara uses Golden, but I prefer Liquitex, it’s non-toxic and doesn’t have a smell)
Transparent/ Clear Gesso

Stamping/ Stencilling
It’d be nice to have some/ a variety of some fun rubber stamps and some decorative stencils – for the rubbers stamps, you’ll need some ink pads too. Stazon is a good waterproof ink pad.

Other Classes that Tamara Laport Offers include:
