Life Book Art Supply List

October 5, 2020 By Mixed Media Art Newbie 2 Comments

coloring book affiliate disclosure
tamara laporte lifebook the book

I’ve noticed that the supply list for Ever After is quite similar to Lifebook so If you have bought art supplies for either of these courses, you are probably good to go. Some of the art supplies listed are easier to find in the UK than they are in the US so I’ve gone through and found alternatives you can find on Amazon or in retail art stores in the U.S.

Watercolor Paper for Life Book

Tamara recommends watercolor paper over mixed media paper because lots of the art lessons are pretty “wet” She uses hot-pressed paper sometimes in a block. For the US market, hotpress paper is harder to find and quite a bit more expensive so you can experiment with what you can find. I have found that Strathmore WC Paper works well for me but I’m going to try some hotpress I found at Hobby Lobby in Life Book 2020.

Several people in the class are using art journals this year and I’m attempting that as well with this beauty that my husband gifted me with for Christmas. It’s SO LARGE for me but I’m determined to give it a go.

Strathmore 32 page 11×14 watercolor journal

watercolor journals

It comes in several sizes and I’m excited to try it out.

Strathmore 11 x 14 US UK or Canada
Strathmore 8 1/2 x 11 US UK or Canada

Watercolor Paper

I’ve ruined a few of my projects because I tried to use mixed media paper instead of Watercolor Paper for some of the projects in the Lifebook course, I recommend some of each. Some projects that you are cutting up as mini art or bookmarks etc will be fine with the mixed media paper, but many of the lessons really need that watercolor flow.

In the US, we have a bit of a harder time finding Hot Pressed WC paper but it can be done.

Arches Hot Press Watercolor Paper

This one seems to be a favorite for the pro’s, it’s pricey for sure and I personally haven’t invested in it yet but if you are at a level where you want the best, this seems to be the recommended stuff. This is the large 10 x 14.

Click to Order Amazon US, UK or Canada – At Michaels
If you live in the US you can order from Michaels and have it delivered to you or the store nearest you. There are several sizes and options including the Arches Block. Click here to see the online only options at Michaels.

Paints for Life Book and any of Tamara Laporte’s classes

Tam’s favorite mixed media supply seems to be Caran D’Ache Neocolor II crayons, she also uses artist watercolor crayons that are no longer being made but you can find them on occasion in art supply stores, they are called Neoart. In the UK and Canada these are called Watercolor Pastels. It is the same product. I am able to get them at my fancy art store in open stock so if there is a color you love, I’d suggest getting the biggest box you can afford and then filling in. Tam uses these on every one of her projects I think.

Flesh Tone Acrylics

Flesh tone acrylics are of course quite important to create Tam’s iconic whimsical ladies. It doesn’t have to be expensive.

Ceramcoat Santa’s Flesh is a favorite.

Posca Paint Pens are perfect for fine details and work over every type of art medium and then dry permanently.

Tam recommends 1 white & 1 black posca pen with a fine nib

Gel medium or (impasto gel) either Liquitex or Golden Matte Gel are fine but get Matte not gloss.

Gesso – Once again either Liquitex or Golden works perfectly. Make sure you get Matte. Gesso’s regular state is white but it also comes in clear and black. You can also tint Gesso. You’ll learn all about this magical substance in the Lifebook art lessons

Art Supply Shopping

Sometimes I think searching for and collecting art supplies is my favorite part of the process. Collage Papers can really be things you already have, sheet music, book pages, movie tickets, scrapbooks or cardmaking paper you already have in your collection. Pick things that have colors that make you happy! Places to look for old books & sheet music are the library used book stores or thrift shops. You can also print interesting papers off of the internet. The New York Library free to use image collection is amazing to find unique ideas. Sometimes art supplies are found in the strangest places. Did you know that pretty printed napkins make amazing backgrounds in your art journal or mixed media projects? I didn’t either until taking this course. The best variety and prices I’ve found in the US is at Tuesday Morning.

Washi Tape

Washi Tape is meant to be a semi-permanent tape so you can reposition it or use it to hold things down while the mat gel gesso dry. There are so many colors and designs, I, of course, adore all the Jane Davenport designs because she uses lots of aqua and pink and mermaid ocean themes. Michaels carries a ton of Washi Tape too.

Don’t forget to use your coupons online at Michaels and then decide to use the free shipping or to have it delivered to the store for you to pick up.

Collage Paper

This really can be free or very cheap! You can use non-glossy magazine pages, old books, old music sheets, letters, envelopes, if you belong to a Buy Nothing Group ask for some there, people are always trying to get rid of their accumulated stuff.

Scrapbook Paper

If you were or still are a scrapbooker, raid those supplies! The non-cardstock versions work perfectly for collage.

This is a fabulous printed tissue paper assortment.

Serviettes – Paper Napkins

My favorites spot to buy these in the US is Tuesday Morning! Michaels has some bright colored basics with holiday ones emerging of course. Watch for those sales on those!

Amazon has a decent selection as well. I love using napkins in my collages.

I have these pretty birds and use them all the time.

Tim Holtz has an entire collection of

Rubber Brayer

This essential little tool really comes in handy for making sure your layers of collage stay tidy and don’t crumple but you’ll need to to spread gesso too.

This speedball one at Michaels is perfect, remember to use your 40% off coupon, that’s how I built up my art supply stash for sure.

Lots of Speedball Brayer options on Amazon too

Top Hand Lettering Art Supplies

March 5, 2020 By Addicted Colorist Leave a Comment

hand lettering 101 for adults

You’ve decided you want to start hand lettering items in your home and office and making the world a prettier place to read. It’s a fun and relatively inexpensive hobby and will, in the end, save you money as you can create your own decor and create invitations and cards by hand showing your friends and family just how much you love them. Great! Be sure to check out our recommended how-to hand lettering books in this article and then go for it. We’d love to see what you create so please tag us on social media.

Hand Lettering Art Supplies

Hand lettering supplies can be as simple & inexpensive or as complex and pricey as you want, just like all other artsy endeavors we pursue as adults. We have pulled out our personal favorites and crowdsourcing from our socials for what lettering supplies people love the most. If we have missed your favorites, please let us know in the comments.

Hand Lettering Paper

You will need nice paper to practice your lettering projects onto so that you don’t mess up your actual project and to learn the process. This big pad by Strathmore is 11×14 with 50 spiral-bound sheets. The paper is suitable for lettering, drawing and mixed media projects. For lettering, you don’t want to use your watercolor paper as it has a texture that makes it hard to form smooth lines you will want in your lettering. I also really like the Visual Journals by Strathmore that come in several sizes and types of paper. Either artist paper or mixed media paper works great. Canson Multimedia Paper is another great option.

You can use Tracing Paper over samples in the book to get a feel for the form and structure of the letter. Inexpensive pads of graph paper are great for practicing your sizing and spacing of letters as well as getting a handle on your ascenders and descenders.

Hand Lettering Pencils

Palomino Blackwing Pencils

I first found out about these ridiculously beautiful pencils from Dawn Nichol called Blackwings, they truly are a step above if you are an art supply junkie like I am. Click here to order Blackwings

palomino blackwing pencils for hand lettering

Harder pencils will work better than a basic #2 you are used to because they won’t smear and are easier to erase after you ink on top. This is a great chart to figure out which pencil will work best for you.

Hand Lettering Pens and Markers

Prismacolor Hand Lettering Kit

Prismacolor has come out with a great set that includes everything a beginner needs to get started.  2 pencils, 7 illustration markers, 2 dual-ended art markers, an eraser and a tips & tricks pamphlet.

Micron Pigma Pens

This is my favorite set of six different nib sizes. It is only suitable for detail work and embellishing your hand lettering.

Faber Castell Pitt Pens

You may already have some Pitt Pens since they are our favorite pen to use in Coloring Books because they don’t bleed through the paper. Tombow Brush Pens and inexpensive double-ended Sharpies work well too.

Best Brush Pens for Hand Lettering

Waterbased Markers

Tombow Brush Markers

  • Durable nylon brush tip can create fine, medium or bold strokes
  • Included colorless blender pen softens and blends colors, creating a watercolor effect

  • Water-based Pigment, Acid-Free, Lightfast, Odorless, Xylene Free
  • These work beautifully for coloring books as well

Amazon US UK or Canada

Koi Coloring Brush from Sakura

Alcohol Markers

Alcohol markers do NOT react to water but they will blend beautifully by either blending them together for an ombre effect or using the colorless blender.

Copic Markers

I have talked about Copic Markers in reference to coloring books here where they really aren’t the best thing to use in most cases, however, for hand-lettering, they are divine!

These are top of the line for artists and the price reflects. Although expensive, the thing to remember is that they are refillable, you can change the nibs and they will last you a lifetime with proper care.

copic markers alcohol based coloring book best of the best

You can start with a basic set before you invest hundreds in the set shown above. That is a dream come true up there. But I started with this basic set. Remember these are very blendable with the colorless marker and into each other so you can blend to create a myriad of colors with a basic set and a bit of color wheel knowledge.

Click to order Copic Markers Amazon US, Uk or Canada

Copic does offer their markers as one-offs as well as small sets like this one.

Copic Marker Basic Sketch Set

Spectrum Noir

The poor man’s ( or woman’s) Copics. They are alcohol-based but they don’t blend as easily and don’t have replaceable nibs or refillable ink. They are gorgeous pens though and are easy to use for your hand-lettering projects.

Spectrum Noir Markers Amazon US, UK or Canada

Pentel Color Pens

Not all alcohol markers are expensive, a set of Pentel markers will work well for hand-lettering and be kinder to your pocketbook. These are fabulous for detail work when you aren’t looking for the brush style lettering, or to use for outlining or detailing on your hand-lettering.

Pentel Color Pens

Pentel Color Pens Amazon US, UK or Canada

Crayola Super Tips

Yep! That’s right, good old Crayola’s are great for hand lettering, you can get thick and thin lines from the same bright happy marker and if you kids touch them there won’t be any fireworks. They don’t blend well but you won’t be using these for your professional presentation, they are great for fun and to practice your lettering with. Spring for the big box!

Crayola Super Tips Amazon US, UK or Canada

Sharpie Pens

Raise your hand if you already have a sharpie collection! I know I do. The dual tips are perfect tools for hand lettering, easy to find and inexpensive. You can buy them by the box so you’ll always have them on hand. The dual tip is my favorite not only for art but for my kitchen marker, my car marker, I have one of these pretty much everywhere. Plus, you can write on anything with your sharpie so if you want cute lettering on that clay pot in the garden? Sharpies are your tool of choice. These come in several colors as well as black.

Click to order a dozen Sharpie Dual Tip Pens

Gelly Roll Gel Pens

Ok, I confess to having an unnatural love for my Gellies! I have used these pretty pens since I was scrapbooking my 30-year-old daughter’s baby books and guess what? Those pens still worked when I pulled them out of my craft storage when I started coloring almost two years ago. I’m still in love with them. The glitter and the metallics are just so gorgeous and vibrant. Take care as you do with all gel pens and watch for smearing but the dry fairly quickly. You can use them to letter or to add embellishments to your hand letters. You can get the big box with all the colors here or order them in smaller batches like Metallics and Glitters etc.

gelly rolls

I use these glitter pens to enhance little spaces in my lettering to make them super special.

Brush Marker Storage

hand lettering supplies

Brush markers should be stored horizontally so you have lots of options, these inexpensive stackable cubes or this Crafter’s Companion option which holds 72 Copics or any other markers you have and love. It is designed so the markers stick out a bit so you can grab them easily.

Tamara has pulled together a collection of 15 mixed media artists, each one teaching a lesson using their favorite fairy tale characters and their own favorite techniques. Meet the 2018 Artists!

Ever After includes a Fairy Tale Art Lesson from each of these Amazing Mixed Media Artists.
Ever After includes a Fairy Tale Art Lesson from each of these Amazing Mixed Media Artists.

It will run over a period of 4 months and you can join either ‘Fairy Tales‘ or ‘Fairy Tales with Style Development‘. The first (fairy tale lessons only) can be taken by anyone; budding beginner artists, intermediates and the more experienced. It is for those who are interested in learning how to create beautiful fairy tale inspired paintings in a variety of mixed media art techniques. Each teacher on Ever After has chosen one fairytale, myth or magical story to work with and will use the beauty, storytelling, deeper meaning and symbolism of the fairy tale to inspire their lesson. The fairy tale only package on its own does not cover style development.

The second (‘Fairy Tales with Style Development‘)  contains all fairy tale lessons and all style development content. The fairy tale lessons will be used to explore and develop our styles as well as learning new techniques from the teachers. Many artists and students who’ve been on my courses over the years have struggled with developing their own style. There aren’t really any courses out there that dedicate themselves to this element of what it means to be an artist, yet, it’s one of the most frequently asked questions I get! So I felt called to finally create something! Yay! The style development content is very rich and in depth. We look at concepts such as: “the story of you”, “inspiration, how to find it, how to use it”, “stepping outside of comfort zones/ changing things up” and “creative blocks, like the inner critic, fears, comparison etc”.

From NOW through July 5, 2018, you can get 20% off by using this code MAGIC2018 when you order!

Another BIG change is that you now have lifetime access to all the lessons! No more scrambling at the end to download the ones you haven’t gotten to yet because the sunshine was calling your name.

For extra magic in your life! 😀 There is also an option to ‘add on’ the fairy tale lessons from previous Ever After courses. These ‘Ever After Fairytale Bundles‘  (EA2016 Fairytale bundle and EA2017 Fairytale bundle) include all the fairy tale lessons from previous Ever After teachers).

Art Supplies Needed For Ever After Fairy Tale Art Classes

Paper:
Tamara works on 140lbs hotpressed watercolor paper.
Brand-wise Tam usually use: Daler-Rowney or Saunders & Waterford – She works either on 9 x 12” or 12 x 16”. Cold pressed is fine too, but don’t go for less than 140lbs in weight. Other brands that will also be fine: Fabriano/ Strathmore/ Canson. I recommend Strathmore or Fabriano, the Canson brand says it’s 140lbs but if you compare it to the Strathmore it’s much lighter and doesn’t stand up to the “Tam Method” of scrubbing/blending on your faces.

Paints:
Water-soluble crayons – Caran D’ache Neocolor II
Tam has lots of high priced brands mentioned but unless you are going to be selling this art, or if it’s going into your art journal, I use cheaper craft paints and am happy with my results. I have a few of these pricey options I use on occasion but they are NOT necessary for most of the projects. I love Ceramcoat, Americana etc available at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Walmart etc.
Some Heavy-bodied Acrylic Paints – Daler Rowney/ Golden or Winsor Newton
Golden Fluid Acrylics (they are very expensive if you want to try these out, buy 2 or 3 of your favorite colors to start with)
Fun but expensive and optional: Golden High Flows (get only a few if you want them)

Pencils:
Watercolor pencils: Derwent Inktense/ Caran D’ache Supracolor (Optional)
Graphite pencils: 2b & heavier – I like the graphgear 1000 by pentel but any pencil will do – mechanical ones are better for finer detail.
Graphite crayons are fun but optional
Color pencils by Prismacolor or Caran D’ache. Prismacolor has some new erasable pencils that I am loving for sketching too.

Mediums:

  • Gel Medium: Golden or Liquitex I have both heavy and soft. If you just want to buy 1 go for soft matte. (Here again, I prefer Liquitex, both price point and that it’s non-toxic with no smell.
  • Cheaper gel medium to use as an adhesive:
    • Daler- Rowney Impasto Gel Matt
    • Golden Matte Medium
    • Liquitex Matte Medium (There is a Liquitex Gel Medium too, it is stickier)

Collage Materials:
Variety of patterned scrapbooking papers, patterned napkins, magazine pages, book pages, music scores and photos – some washi tapes are fun too.

Tools:

  • Brayer
  • Palette Knives
  • Scissors
  • Rulers
  • Erasers/
  • Heat gun or Hair Dryer
  • Foam Brushes
  • Brushes (Tamara uses Pro Arte Acrylix brushes for her method with faces. In the US I could only find them from this UK seller on Ebay but there is no shipping.  For her work any soft haired brushes will do)

Markers:
Posca pens (black/ white – fine-nibbed and thicker
nibbed) OR
Poster paint sharpies aka water based NOT oil based (black/ white – fine-nibbed and thicker nibbed)
Tombow Markers in your favorite colors
Mermaid Markers from Jane Davenport
Paint Over Pens from Jane Davenport

Inks/ Sprays:
Dylusions Ink Sprays (start with a few)
Daler Rowney Acrylic Artists Ink
Jane Davenport Inks (Available at Michaels)
India Ink (Small bottle)

Gesso:
White Gesso (Tamara uses Golden, but I prefer Liquitex, it’s non-toxic and doesn’t have a smell)
Transparent/ Clear Gesso

Stamping/ Stencilling
It’d be nice to have some/ a variety of some fun rubber stamps and some decorative stencils – for the rubbers stamps, you’ll need some ink pads too. Stazon is a good waterproof ink pad.

Other Classes that Tamara Laport Offers include:

Best Watercolor Supplies for Coloring Books

Watercolor Supplies for Adult Coloring Books

I’ll be introducing my favorite watercolor supplies to use in your coloring books in this article. As always, use caution with any new supplies and play with them a bit in your art journal or a page you aren’t in love with before you tackle a new project. Know that MOST coloring book pages aren’t watercolor paper so you will need to take care to use less water than what you would use for proper watercolor painting. You can always copy the pages in your books to watercolor paper.

Derwent Watercolor Pencils

Derwent has two options:

Derwent Inktense Watercolor pencils can be used wet or dry but when water is added the colors become INTENSE.. thus the name.  Derwent Intense come in tiny packs of 6, or 12 but I would recommend one of the 3 middle sizes. 24, 36, 48(in a fancy wooden box below) or 72. Derwent Inktense Watercolor pencils in the UK and in Canada. These are not actually watercolors but instead are ink in the form of a pencil that activate with water. They are a bit magical. Peta Hewitt’s videos are invaluable in learning to use this watercolor supply.

inktense watercolor pencils in a beautiful wood box watercolor supplies

My favorite instructional artist Peta Hewitt shows you how to use Inktense Colored Pencils in this tutorial video.

Peta Hewitt warns us Inktense Pencils actually aren’t watercolor but rather acrylic ink in the form of a pencil so it does activate with water, but once it dries, then it’s permanent as opposed to watercolors which you can add water too and move the color around.

Faber Castell also has a couple of options for you in Watercolor Pencils

Albrecht Durer Artist Watercolor Pencils

These pencils open new horizons to your artistic creations by combining the advantages and applications of the classical watercolor paints and color pencils. The high pigment density ensures unsurpassed brilliance and the maximum possible light- fastness even for the most delicate shades and nuances.

Wonderfully creamy leads and high-density color make these pencils a perfect choice for anyone who is at all serious about working with watercolor pencils. The colors are more muted than those of Derwent Inktense Pencils, but the marks made can be moved more than once with water, so they serve a slightly different purpose. The two sets combined would be the absolutely ultimate collection a water colorist could desire.

Koi Water Color Travel Set – I really love this set as it contains a mini set of 24 pans of paint plus a Koi Waterbrush. This is made by Sakura, makers of Gelly Roll pens. This is the set I have.  I was warned at the art store that these colors aren’t artist grade and will fade with time and exposure to sunlight so if that is important to you, check the lightfast rating.

Some people have a hard time controlling the water that comes out of water brushes so you can use watercolor brushes. You will need a small and medium round and a small flat brush. You can buy sets of them for very inexpensively to start out or head to your hobby store and buy one or two nice one’s using whatever coupon you have.

Waterbrushes are quite handy and are my favorite one’s particularly on the go as you don’t have to rinse the brushes out,  just blot off the color on your practice paper and go to a near area. See Peta’s video above for two ways to use the water brushes.
