fabulous figures by jane davenport learn to draw book

The Adult Coloring Book phenomenon has brought to the forefront the need for grownups to have something to do as a hobby that gets us unplugged from social media, paper and drawing utensil in hand and doing something using the creative sides of our brains. I am just loving all of the unique ideas that are coming out for ways to use your coloring skills in different ways and open yourself up to other ideas for pastimes. I call Coloring Books my gateway drug to Art Journaling and Mixed Media art. All these colored pencils, markers, pastels etc. have a second life now inside my art journals and other mixed media art pieces. I even used some coloring pages and decoupaged a big box to store what else… more art supplies.

Adult Activity Books including drawing, art, puzzles and more to keep your mind and hands busy.

My Favorite Mixed Media Art Journaling Teachers include Tamara Laporte who runs two online classes each year “Life Book” & “Ever After” as well as dozens of stand-alone online art classes. Jane Davenport is a fun and inspirational teacher with a completely different style than Tamara but oh so fabulous to learn. She recently ran a fun journal prompt project for the Month of May using hashtag #MerMaywithJaneD the was exclusively mermaids. It was so much fun.

She has come out with three books so far and I really can NOT talk enough about how amazing each of them are.

Drawing & Painting BEAUTIFUL FACES by Jane Davenport

Drawing & Painting BEAUTIFUL FACES by Jane Davenport

This was Jane’s first drawing lesson type book and you can just go through it and learn to draw her style of whimsical faces from large to small, turned faces, hairstyles, you name it. She also has an online class that shows you step by step with the fun and fabulous Jane teaching you everything plus more than what is in the book. I really love taking this book and a sketchbook and pencil with me to completely unplug from the internet.

One is a Jane Davenport style adult coloring book! WHAT? I think I have been waiting for that my whole life without knowing it.

Fabulous Figures – I ♥ Heart Drawing

The second new book is a companion to her art course I Heart Drawing and teaches you how to draw Fabulous Figures using her uber unicorn mermaid filled secret ways. I am actually just starting this online course and will be super excited to have a written reference as well.

I love drawing fabulous figures by Jane Davenport

I really can’t believe the beautiful figures I’ve already learned to draw on my own just in the first 10 or so pages, I go slow because I don’t want to miss any of the awesomeness that Jane has to offer. You can see my mixed media artwork on my artsy Instagram account here AHippieArtist

Tamara Laporte of Willowing and Life Book Fame

tamara laporte willowing lifebook

I found Tamara Laporte through a couple artist friends when I was asking for a recommendation for a multi-teacher class, she and Lifebook came highly recommended. I am not exaggerating when I say that following along with Tam as she teaches you to draw and paint adorable whimsical girls has so changed my life in magical ways.

tamara laporte lifebook the book
Life Book – The Book by Tamara Laporte

Tamara Laporte Online Mixed Media Art Classes

The most famous of Tam’s classes and now the subject of her first-ever book, “Lifebook” runs annually with an early bird pricing showing up in December through January and then for full price the remainder of the year. You really could join in at any time because for your art class purchase you are allowed do download ALL of the hundreds of video’s so you could go back at any time. The thing you would miss however is the amazingly supportive community that Tamara and her teamwork to create in the Facebook and Ning groups that comprise all the other artists and artists in training. You’ll find brand new mixed-media people like me, to professional artists, side by side going through the weekly lessons together. At first, it IS a bit intimidating, I won’t lie, but the support you are given when you share just a bit is a bit humbling and has brought me to tears a few times, not only for the support and help that I have received but when I’ve seen it with other’s in the class.

You can still sign up for Lifebook 2018 and don’t worry about catching up, I’d probably do the first two lessons that Tam runs to get the idea of how Lifebook works and then join in with where the rest of the folks are and look through the previous lessons to see which ones appeal to you. But that’s the whole Hippie Artist part of me, you don’t have to go in a straight line or follow any rules to achieve a great result in art or in life.

You can also go back and do just Tam’s lessons from past years of Life Book. I think I’ve bought almost all of these when she’s had them on sale. You won’t be working along with the class with these but you can always post on the Willowing and Friends Facebook page.

Life Book Art Supply List

October 5, 2020 By Mixed Media Art Newbie 2 Comments

coloring book affiliate disclosure
tamara laporte lifebook the book

I’ve noticed that the supply list for Ever After is quite similar to Lifebook so If you have bought art supplies for either of these courses, you are probably good to go. Some of the art supplies listed are easier to find in the UK than they are in the US so I’ve gone through and found alternatives you can find on Amazon or in retail art stores in the U.S.

Watercolor Paper for Life Book

Tamara recommends watercolor paper over mixed media paper because lots of the art lessons are pretty “wet” She uses hot-pressed paper sometimes in a block. For the US market, hotpress paper is harder to find and quite a bit more expensive so you can experiment with what you can find. I have found that Strathmore WC Paper works well for me but I’m going to try some hotpress I found at Hobby Lobby in Life Book 2020.

Several people in the class are using art journals this year and I’m attempting that as well with this beauty that my husband gifted me with for Christmas. It’s SO LARGE for me but I’m determined to give it a go.

Strathmore 32 page 11×14 watercolor journal

watercolor journals

It comes in several sizes and I’m excited to try it out.

Strathmore 11 x 14 US UK or Canada
Strathmore 8 1/2 x 11 US UK or Canada

Watercolor Paper

I’ve ruined a few of my projects because I tried to use mixed media paper instead of Watercolor Paper for some of the projects in the Lifebook course, I recommend some of each. Some projects that you are cutting up as mini art or bookmarks etc will be fine with the mixed media paper, but many of the lessons really need that watercolor flow.

In the US, we have a bit of a harder time finding Hot Pressed WC paper but it can be done.

Arches Hot Press Watercolor Paper

This one seems to be a favorite for the pro’s, it’s pricey for sure and I personally haven’t invested in it yet but if you are at a level where you want the best, this seems to be the recommended stuff. This is the large 10 x 14.

Click to Order Amazon US, UK or Canada – At Michaels
If you live in the US you can order from Michaels and have it delivered to you or the store nearest you. There are several sizes and options including the Arches Block. Click here to see the online only options at Michaels.

Paints for Life Book and any of Tamara Laporte’s classes

Tam’s favorite mixed media supply seems to be Caran D’Ache Neocolor II crayons, she also uses artist watercolor crayons that are no longer being made but you can find them on occasion in art supply stores, they are called Neoart. In the UK and Canada these are called Watercolor Pastels. It is the same product. I am able to get them at my fancy art store in open stock so if there is a color you love, I’d suggest getting the biggest box you can afford and then filling in. Tam uses these on every one of her projects I think.

Flesh Tone Acrylics

Flesh tone acrylics are of course quite important to create Tam’s iconic whimsical ladies. It doesn’t have to be expensive.

Ceramcoat Santa’s Flesh is a favorite.

Posca Paint Pens are perfect for fine details and work over every type of art medium and then dry permanently.

Tam recommends 1 white & 1 black posca pen with a fine nib

Gel medium or (impasto gel) either Liquitex or Golden Matte Gel are fine but get Matte not gloss.

Gesso – Once again either Liquitex or Golden works perfectly. Make sure you get Matte. Gesso’s regular state is white but it also comes in clear and black. You can also tint Gesso. You’ll learn all about this magical substance in the Lifebook art lessons

Art Supply Shopping

Sometimes I think searching for and collecting art supplies is my favorite part of the process. Collage Papers can really be things you already have, sheet music, book pages, movie tickets, scrapbooks or cardmaking paper you already have in your collection. Pick things that have colors that make you happy! Places to look for old books & sheet music are the library used book stores or thrift shops. You can also print interesting papers off of the internet. The New York Library free to use image collection is amazing to find unique ideas. Sometimes art supplies are found in the strangest places. Did you know that pretty printed napkins make amazing backgrounds in your art journal or mixed media projects? I didn’t either until taking this course. The best variety and prices I’ve found in the US is at Tuesday Morning.

Washi Tape

Washi Tape is meant to be a semi-permanent tape so you can reposition it or use it to hold things down while the mat gel gesso dry. There are so many colors and designs, I, of course, adore all the Jane Davenport designs because she uses lots of aqua and pink and mermaid ocean themes. Michaels carries a ton of Washi Tape too.

Don’t forget to use your coupons online at Michaels and then decide to use the free shipping or to have it delivered to the store for you to pick up.

Collage Paper

This really can be free or very cheap! You can use non-glossy magazine pages, old books, old music sheets, letters, envelopes, if you belong to a Buy Nothing Group ask for some there, people are always trying to get rid of their accumulated stuff.

Scrapbook Paper

If you were or still are a scrapbooker, raid those supplies! The non-cardstock versions work perfectly for collage.

This is a fabulous printed tissue paper assortment.

Serviettes – Paper Napkins

My favorites spot to buy these in the US is Tuesday Morning! Michaels has some bright colored basics with holiday ones emerging of course. Watch for those sales on those!

Amazon has a decent selection as well. I love using napkins in my collages.

I have these pretty birds and use them all the time.

Tim Holtz has an entire collection of

Rubber Brayer

This essential little tool really comes in handy for making sure your layers of collage stay tidy and don’t crumple but you’ll need to to spread gesso too.

This speedball one at Michaels is perfect, remember to use your 40% off coupon, that’s how I built up my art supply stash for sure.

Lots of Speedball Brayer options on Amazon too

Santa's Magical Christmas Helpers Jane F Hankins - 2019

Welcome to the Imaginary World of Jane F. Hankins Coloring Books. I believe that you will be just as enchanted as I was after seeing the first book. Jane’s books are professionally published on thick artist paper and several of them are huge oversized books suitable for framing and giving as gifts. Most books contain 25 single-side, 11″ x 14″ prints of original drawings, on HEAVY 80lb. Cover Stock paper, created specifically for this book! Pages are perforated for easy removal, display, and framing.

This is adult coloring, for adults who appreciate real art, not hastily drawn elephants or flowers, filled with computer-generated polygons.

Each book has its own theme and magical qualities so take a look. I have video flip throughs of a few and I’ll link to Jane’s social so you can see even more wondrousness.

In this book, she illustrates the spirited antics of Santa’s Helpers. These merry wee Elves have their own version of “The 12 Days of Christmas”, which is quite charming… even if a bit unusual. See how they go about decorating and placing toys under the tree – sprinkling their special Elf Magic wherever they go!

So, take a break this busy season and color your new Christmas Heirloom. I guarantee you will catch yourself smiling!

Jane Hankins books are just a treat, below you’ll find links to each along with a few flip-thru videos. We think you’ll fall in love like we did.

The Imaginary Garden – A Fine Art Coloring Book

Take a look at my flip through back in 2017. You literally can HEAR how thick and unctuous the paper is.

I have all but two of Jane Hankins coloring books, that alone says a great deal regarding how I feel about her art. These books truly are, as noted on each book, “fine art coloring book(s)”. At first glance they may appear to be on the expensive side. But the old saying;”you get what you pay for” definitely speaks volumes in this case. The art is truly beyond adorable. You will smile even when you are just thinking about these books.

If you aren’t familiar with her books they are quite remarkable. A HUGE size 11×17 on 80pound artist quality paper. So, if you’ve been frustrated that you can’t use your fancy markers or paints, this is the book to do that all in. Each of the pages in all her books are perforated and spiral bound. Yes, they are more expensive than your average coloring book but once you have one in your hand you’ll know why.

When we feature an artist we like to give our colorists a little peek behind the artistic genius in our Meet the Artist Q&A.

Q&A with Jane F. Hankins – Illustrator, Author, Artist

Q1. What do you enjoy drawing the most?

Adorable characters and creatures that dwell in the land between my ears.  In other words, all my drawings are from my own Imaginary World. What you are seeing in the coloring books are the creatures I love, and they are what I enjoy drawing the most.

Q2. How did you get started?

I was creative as a child and that started it all! I had lots of crayons, paper, and playdoh and by the age of 4, I declared myself an artist… as well as a dancer and singer. By the time I was in my second year of college, I decided I would concentrate on visual art. I did art sales as a student, juried arts and craft shows and then galleries and museum exhibits.  Now, I’m delighted to be creating coloring books that allow collaborative art with colorists from around the world.

It had not occurred to me to do a coloring book until my daughter suggested it in 2017, “Just do what you draw!” Then my dear cousin, Meg, said, “I’ll make it happen!” And that she certainly did!

Q3. Who or what has inspired you?

Literature is an inspiration!  Everything from Harry Potter to Fannie Flagg’s wonderful novels has influenced my work. Nature and music are always excellent sources of inspiration. Artists that have inspired me include illustrators Hillary Knight and Maurice Spendak, Garth Williams, who did the Giant Golden Book of Elves and Fairies that my aunt gave me when I was six years old.

Q4. What materials do you enjoy using?

When I draw I use Micron or Stadler drawing pens. I also love watercolor and color pencils for works on paper.  All my artwork is original. I draw freehand, and nothing is computer-generated, enhanced or projected. I work in sculpture, paintings, and drawings.  I sculpt using porcelain and stoneware clay which I “cold finish” with acrylic paint and sometimes embellish with found objects (marbles, beads, buttons…).  The paintings are acrylic on canvas.

Q5. Do you like to color in your designs or prefer to have others do that?

Prior to developing coloring books, I only colored my own drawings.  Now that I’ve developed 8 print books and 3 digital books, I’m so busy drawing that I don’t have as much time to color.  I really LOVE seeing how others interpret the drawings and the incredible talent when coloring them.  I’m always delighted and surprised by the amazing work of the many colorists that share their pictures.

Q6. What supplies (brands) do you recommend for your book(s)?

As far as a brand, I recommend Prismacolor pencils.   I use different brands of watercolor paint, but I only use it sparingly.  I’ve seen on social media works that use alcohol markers and other various mediums, and I think they look beautiful!

Q7. What is your favorite coloring book other than your own?

Kerby Rosanes specifically Mythomorphia.  I love the detail and creativity of the drawings especially the dragons.

Q8. What is your favorite thing to do when you are not doing your art?

When I’m not creating art, I enjoy writing on my novels, reading, being outdoors, going to movies and, of course, creative playtime with my husband and my granddaughters!

Q9. Who is your favorite coloring book artist?

Kerby Rosanes is my favorite coloring book artist.  I’m fascinated by his work and the juxtaposition of the imaginary creatures, with castles and buildings coming out of them.  As an artist, I appreciate that they are not computer generated and are original works.

Q10. Can you tell us about any other projects you are working on?

My current project is an angel themed coloring book.  Over the past 2 years have been doing a series of paintings of “Our Better Angels”.  I’m also looking forward to illustrating and writing a children’s book with my husband. On top of all of that, I’m working on the third volume in my trilogy of “The Peavine Chronicles“.

Bonus Q – Anything else I should be asking you or other artists that would be interesting for your fans or future fans?

Perhaps ask them the importance and/or impact on other mediums artists work with.  For me, I’m working in writing, painting, drawing and sculpture and this results in more options as far as artistic expression. Each area inspires artworks in a different medium.

One little known fact about me is I’m fascinated by theoretical physics. It’s a great exercise for the imagination.

Jane Davenport's Blue Bird Painting on Society 6

Jane Davenport is probably the most famous to me for her mixed media beautiful whimsical ladies.

Just as I discovered her book “Beautiful Faces,” she launched an entire line of mixed media art supplies exclusively for Michael’s including washi tape, art journals, acrylic and watercolor paint, magical mermaid markers and so much more. I am really enjoying working through this book. Just get a pencil and a journal and by the end of the book, you’ll be drawing faces and figures that at least resemble Jane’s beauties.

My Review on Amazon

So beautiful.. like a stroll through one of Jane Davenports art journals just for you.

OH MY GAWD! I really don’t understand how Jane Davenport keeps coming up with the most amazing art books. I’ve now looked through it a dozen times and I think I see something new each time. The biggest problem with it for me will be that I don’t want to ruin any of Jane’s amazing artwork by actually marking it myself so the only way to get past that will probably be to order a second copy.. oh well! Honestly, so much of her art is in this book, you’ll feel like Jane has sent you a copy of one of the journals you see her working in during the online workshops. My Fabulous Figures Review

“I get a little giddy just thinking about how amazing this book is! Not kidding! There is so so much information packed into this book focusing on figure drawing. That sounds pretty dry and boring, right? But not the way Jane Davenport presents it. She breaks things down so you don’t have to spend a fortune at a fancy art school in Paris because Jane already did that and now she’s sharing her vast amount of knowledge with you. She starts with basics but then gets right down into the details that most classes just never get to. How to draw feet & hands, how to draw a figure that’s twisting, how to draw different body types. If you’ve never taken one of Janes online art courses I encourage you to join in with the class that will accompany this book. She’ll be presenting it “live” and after having done the live Supplies me class for the last month, I’m hooked. I’d also recommend her beautiful faces book. Join the Jane Davenport FB group to see what people are already creating! We love you Jane!! ~ Chrissy “

She also started a class called Folkloric Fabulous Figures to accompany the book. I’m IN for this one. Click here to join in and explore the world of the Davenpeeps.

I’ll detail my favorites Jane products for you below.

rainbow markers from Jane Davenport

Jane’s Mermaid watercolor markers are SO incredibly juicy and after they run out of ink, the brushes can be reloaded with liquid watercolors or used as water brushes. They should be stored upright so they don’t leak. They probably aren’t your best options for your portable journaling.

The color names of all Jane’s products really add to the rainbowitis Davenpeep mystique. (Don’t worry, just hang around Jane’s fans and you’ll pick up the special lingo. Colors include Seaweed, Siren, Byron Bay, Blue Bottle, Deep Sea, Jellyfish, Starfish, Coral, Beach, Pirate’s Gold, Lobster, and Reef. One word of warning with these, the colors on the caps do not necessarily match the color of the ink, so swatching these pens is uber important.

Jane Davenport’s paper pad with 48 different designs is absolutely gorgeous! I still haven’t figured out anything to do with it but you’ll see in my Instagram flip-thru video here just how pretty these papers are. If you have any ideas, please leave them in the comments below. Click here to order on Amazon.

Magic Wand Colored Pencils are perfect for sketching faces and figures in Jane’s lessons. Even if you already have colored pencils in your art supplies, you are going to want these just for the gorgeous Jane tin.

my art supply stash with stencils, stamps and ink from scrapbook.com

If you have done any scrapbooking, stamping, art journaling or mixed media art you have seen Tim Holtz art supplies! He fell into the industry backwards but you can tell his genuine passion in all his videos. I love his motto… Embrace Imperfection!

Meet the Designer: Tim Holtz

Here he is at Creativation 2018 showing us his new products including 12 new oxide colors, blending brushes, and Distress Resist Spray.

My favorite place to buy his supplies online is Scrapbook.com They have sales all the time, great shipping and they send you a gift in every purchase. I love free surprises!  Amazon also has a large supply of Tim Holtz Ranger Ink products.

I really adore his stencils for layering

They make your backgrounds so random and juicy, things don’t have to look grungy distressed which is Tim Holtz’s favorite look when it comes to stencils though, it all has to do with the colors you use.

This harlequin diamond patterned stencil is my very favorite.

I think I use it on every project. By the way, Tim says you really don’t need to wash your stencils, just wipe them off. If you get too intense with your cleaning you will likely bend or break some of the tiny details of the stencil. I like the smaller sizes for the price, of course, I never want to cover an entire background with the same thing and if I do I can just use and repeat across the page.

I use this splatter brush every day! Yes, you can use any brush to do this, but this one just works better and doesn’t mess up your paints. I also have become addicted to these dauber tops. You can use them on regular craft paint bottles as well.

Tim Holtz and Ranger introduce Distress Micro Glaze™ – 1 of 4 new Distress accessory products

This distress glaze is a game changer! If you have ever used the distressed inks through a stencil as a bottom layer and then tried to paint on top of it, you know that it is SUPER reactive to anything that is wet. So, you end up smudging everything. This product fixes that.
