Completely thrilled with the Foodie’s Colouring book and what a great idea!
I receive lots of coloring books like this but rarely do I get so excited when I start going through the pages. I am a Foodie and a Coloring Book Addict so the two passions in one place are perfect. First, you get fun and fanciful foodie pictures to color in, all with a unique style obviously hand-drawn, none of this throw it together in Photoshop stuff. Next, you get pages with quotes from notable Foodies like Julia Child to color in and hilarious pictures, a favorite is an octopus with different cooking utensils in all 8 of his “hands” I just received this yesterday and normally I wait to do a review but not so with this book.
As if the fun pictures to color weren’t enough, in the center of this book are some wildly YUMMY looking sweets photos with the recipe included. I think I gained weight just looking at them but will be heading to the store for ingredients today!
The pictures are one-sided so no problems with bleed through. There is also a fun quiz to find out just HOW much of a wild Foodie YOU are.
“Everyone knows a foodie or is a foodie themselves. Foodies love good food, good company, and sharing the tastes and flavors of a well-cooked dish. In The Foodie’s Colouring Book, foodies can rejoice and relax as they colour in a variety of food-themed images, take the foodie quiz, laugh at the foodie alphabet, and join the adult colouring book craze sweeping the world. For mindfulness or just for fun, The Foodie’s Colouring Book also includes a bonus cookbook section with sweet recipes to cook at home. Colour, cook, create!”
We were thrilled to be able to get a little one on one time with the illustrator of the Foodie Colouring Book Haylea Bridle.
What do you enjoy drawing the most
I very much enjoyed the challenge of drawing food I wouldn’t normally draw. Oysters for example, I must say, were never at the top of my to-do list, however I think I can now say if ‘Oyster Anatomy; an intimate glance’ happened to be a topic at pub trivia, I’d be going home with the meat tray.
How did you get started?
By testing my parents’ patience as a child. Things were drawn on that shouldn’t have been drawn on, using things that shouldn’t have been used to draw with. I called it my ‘experimental phase’, my parents’ called it their ‘blue phase’.
Who or what has inspired you?
For this book, breakfast, lunch and dinner (aaand the many snacks in between) became edible inspiration. Humble snack expeditions to the fridge began to take a little longer as it transformed into 5 shelves of (at some times, decomposing) reference. A mere sandwich was never escorted to my mouth without a notepad as witness.I have a spatially inconvenient habit of collecting large amounts of children’s picture books, from which I also draw great inspiration. A fact the shelving section of my local IKEA can attest to. Some find inspiration in Tolstoy; I find inspiration in Toy Story
.Do you like to color in your designs or prefer to have others do that?
Others! I colored in the cover for The Foodies Coloring Book, and I can say at that point in time, I was experiencing very little therapeutic benefit that coloring in is known for, knowing that every line rebelling pencil stroke would be on show! As these illustrations were created with the intent of being black and white, there is nothing better than seeing someone breathe new life into them with color.
What supplies (brands) do you recommend for your book(s)?
My favourite coloured pencils are by a brand called LYRA. They are so beautiful to hold, it makes you never want to pick up anything else again. They are smudge-proof and waterproof too, especially handy for those susceptible to a celebrational weep once finished colouring!
This illustration and quote just cracked me up.. Check out the Melons Dolly Parton is holding!
We also like to know what the book publishers have in store for colorists so we did a short Q&A with them as well. Hopefully, the coloring “craze” is a great way for more people to discover and benefit this way.
The Coloring Book trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down.. if anything it is picking up in the US with more and more creative and unique ideas for people to connect with. The posterzines the publisher spoke of before are available too with “The Foodie’s Colouring Posters” featuring 2 giant posters and 3 small posters. What fun for a restaurant opening or a potluck party.
These books are also available at the Book Depository possibly with less postage so check there as well. I’ll be coloring in this book very soon and sharing my results and thoughts about the paper on the social media channels so be watching for that, and luckily I received a set of Lyra Colored Pencils for Christmas so I’ll be trying those out first since they were suggested by the illustrator.
All those involved with this coloring book would love it if you use the hashtags #foodiescolouring #foodiescoloring or #foodiescolouringbook when you color in a page so they can see their creations brought to life by the colorists out there.
