Metallic marks make a statement in your pieces from a Steampunk coloring page to a piece of mixed media art, sometimes a metallic mark on your work makes it go from ok to wow! I’ve gone through my stash of metallic markers, pens and pencils to bring you the best options for both coloring and art.
METALLIC PAINT MARKERS
Posca Paint Markers – Metallic, Set of 8, Medium Tip
Posca paint markers are a favorite of artists who want to make precise marks in their work that will cover any and all art supplies as well as pretty much any surface including glass, plastic, papers and more. You pump them to prime and then draw and mark your piece of art. They are fabulous to use to paint rocks. Also available at Joggles & Amazon.
Molotow Metallic Paint Pens
Molotow are similar to Posca’s except that they are refillable so more economical and flexible. I’ve never tried them but many artists like them better than Posca pens. They are on my wish list.

METALLIC PENS
For gold and silver pens I really love the Uniball Gel Impact set which comes with a gold, silver and white. I use these every year for holiday cards and tags. For bright colors Gelly Roll pens will always be my favorite. I started scrapbooking back in the 80’s and when I started coloring in 2016, my Gelly Roll pens were still working. Pretty miraculous for a gel pen. I talk about these extensively on my gel pens review page but I’ll go into the metallic details here as well.
The thing to remember with Gelly Roll pens is that the metallic ones have glitter tops and the glitter pens have shiny tops. This is confusing but consistent in the brand.
Gelly Roll Metallics come in these sets as well as the set with each and every pen and color that Gelly Roll makes and individual colors. If you have a Michaels nearby, they have decent availability in indivdual and small sets (I’ve never seen the large set there).

METALLIC COLORED PENCILS
I have never found any colored pencils that really are the metallic feel that you can get straight out of a paint 🎨 pen or marker. I do like the Derwent Metallic set, while they aren’t super shiny they DO give the impression of metal particularly when you are coloring Steampunk images and you want it to look more weathered.
This colorist offers a great video tutorial with how to use basic Poly’s & Prisma’s to get a metallic effect on your images.
The brand that was recommended in the Coloring Book Reddit group was the KALOUR Metallic Set. Reviewers said they were creamy, colors are beautiful and while not shiny like we noted earlier, they give an interesting effect and can be burnished to a higher sheen. The big set of metallic Kalour pencils are available here. There is also a set of 180 colored pencils with 12 metallic colors. They are said to be a great budget option so I may be adding them to my budget friendly coloring supplies soon.
